Pray For Our Leaders

This is a presidential election year.  A crucial time in our nation that happens every four years.  Choosing a president for the next 4 years is not a task that should be taken lightly, especially in the times we are living in.  There are key issues to be considered, at home and abroad.  We in Maryland go to the polls this Tuesday to vote in the primary.  Others around the nation have already been or will soon go.  Make the effort to vote, both in the primary and general election on November 4th.

Scripture tells us in I Timothy, chapter 2, verses 1 & 2, to pray for our leaders.  “First of all, then, I admonish and urge that petitions, prayer, and intercessions, and thanksgivings be offered on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in positions of authority or high responsibility…” I Timothy 2:1-2 the Everyday Life Bible.

If we are to enjoy the blessings of good government, we must commit to pray for our government officials at all levels.

A Prayer for Presidential Selection:  Father, we thank you for the freedom to worship You in this great nation You have allowed us to live in.  We pray that You will continue to bless the United States of America.  As we go through the process of freedom to vote for a new president of our nation, we pray that the person selected will be a person of strong character, constantly seeking Your truth and guidance, always displaying courage and integrity, a person of insight and discernment who adores wisdom and understanding.  We thank You for granting this our request that we pray in Jesus name.  Amen.

Welcome 2008

Another year is here.  It seems like we were sending a welcome to 2007 just a fews days ago.  Time does fly by so.  Let us be sure we live the time we have following the teachings of the Lord from the Bible.  It's principles are so profound and yet so simple.  And they also work.  Life's teachings from the Bible are for everyday.  Today, and tomorrow.  Check out the Bible, the Book of John is a good place to start.  The Bible is a book of wisdom.  Get wisdom - Get understanding!

Don't Wish Me Merry Xmas!

I get somewhat offended these days when I’m wished “Merry Xmas or Happy Holiday”. The holiday is Christmas, not Xmas or some unnamed happy holiday. - My response to those store clerks (most I know, are just doing as they are told) and telephone greeters who have wished me a happy holiday this year has been “Well, Merry Christmas to you”. Some say thank-you others say nothing, some clerks smile.

This holiday is meant to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. No other reason. I encourage you as we go through the hustle and bustle of Christmas to focus on that thought. Christ is the center of the holiday and should remain our focus year round.

Merry Christmas - With love from Dad.

Let Us Give Thanks!

It’s Thanksgiving again.  We celebrate every year.  Another day off from work for most, some two days.  Most gather with family and/or friends.  But, what is the thanks part?  What are we thankful for?  And… To whom do we give thanks?   The Bible tells us “”Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus”.  -- I Thessalonians 5:18.  Note that the writer states IN all things, not FOR all things.  Not all things are good are they?  We should be thankful ‘in all things’; thankful that whatever the circumstance we are not alone.  God is always there.  Family and friends are usually there also, but God is always there to help us in ways that family and friends cannot.
Philippians 4:6 relays “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”   This message from Philippians adds prayer to thanksgiving.  We pray to God, giving thanks (and petitioning).
As we celebrate this Thanksgiving, let us not forget to give thanks for the upcoming celebration of Christmas, giving thanks to God for the most wonderful gift of Jesus Christ.

Proverbs 21:5

“The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.”  Proverbs 21:5 NIV

Proper planning for life’s opportunities results in a more successful result than rushing into things without thinking them through.  Often we find others rushing us to make decisions.  “If you don’t grab this opportunity today” they say, “you may miss it forever”.  I say that if it is an idea not worthy of giving thought and concern to, it probably is not worth pursuing.  Take time, weigh both the benefits and disadvantages.  Worthy projects will always still be around after careful consideration.  Projects, not worthy of our time and/or money may disappear, and good riddance.  Better to let the “quick riches” pass, than regretting the lack of prudent planning.  Make good plans - then execute!   A Proverb for all areas of life.

Cowboy Boots

I recently bought a new pair of cowboy boots.  Actually....It's the first time I ever bought a pair of cowboy boots.  Not knowing for sure what they should feel like I wasn't sure if I had the right size or not.  The first couple of times I wore them, I felt sloppy and like my feet were slipping up and down inside the boot. (Because they were)  I thought everyone could surely tell that these boots just were not for me, and made me look awkward and uncoordinated.  Just the opposite happened.  People who noticed complimented me on the good looking boots, and how nice they looked.  I couldn't understand it.  How come people didn't now how terrible it seemed on the inside of those boots?  By chance, the next time I wore them, I chose a thicker pair of socks.  Boy, did that make a difference!  A great fit and most comfortable!  The boots still looked the same on the outside, but it was what was on the inside of the boot that made the difference.

Isn't that just like it is with us?  People see only what is on the outside.  They really don't know how we feel or what we think on the inside.  Only we know what is on the inside.  Oh yeah.  God knows too.  We should make every effort to be sure that what God sees on the inside remains good and pure.  It needs to be a good fit, just like my thicker pair of socks inside my boots.

Just like I did not know I needed a change of socks to make a great fit; we sometimes don't see that we need a "change of socks" inside to be acceptable in God's eyes.  But once we make the change, we realize how much satisfaction and comfort it brings to be "walking comfortably" with God.

I love wearing my boots now.  It's a great walk.      Get wisdom - Get understanding!        Dad

BE SLOW TO ANGER

While traveling in Lancaster, PA recently, we came upon a sign that we found most interesting.  It read "Anger is only one letter away from Danger".  Wow!  So right.  We must always control our anger, lest the devil take control of us.  Anger happens.  It is how we control it that makes the difference in our lives.  The following scripture is another one of those wise life lessons we need to understand and employ:
"
In your anger do not sin : Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold."  Ephesians 4:26-27 NIV

Too Much TV

We had to lay down the law around home.  Tubby just was watching too much TV.  Animal Planet seems to be her favorite channel.  She shuttered when the show was on recently about overweight pets.
